I'm still really considering doing the "Go Greek or Go Home" mentality that large schools have in their sororities and fraternities and if it really is how the media portrays it. I feel like it would be interesting to look into at larger schools such as Texas State and UT because it is so different from Southwestern's greek systems. I would look into the exclusivity and consequences of the actions taken by greeks and non-greeks. What does everyone think? Is it a little too cliche to do something on greek systems?
I don't think it's cliche at all... when you mentioned it in class the other day, I thought it'd be very interesting to research. Are you thinking about focusing on the greek system and its functionings as a whole, or more on the differences between chapters on different campuses?
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's cliche at all, either. I think the challenge will be in narrowing it down and make it specific enough so it becomes doable within the framework of the class. As a first step, it would be useful to develop a little this idea of go greek or go home: what does it mean, how does it manifest itself, etc? Also, as someone who hasn't been involved with the greek system (or known anybody who has), my experience is that I/my friends had a pretty full, exciting social life without being part of that world. So, who is this "go greek ... " slogan relevant for, really? People who are already greek? People who are at the "margins" of that world, etc. We can talk about this on Monday and we can take it apart until we end up with something small and well defined :)
